WIT Southwest Regional Rally History / Guidelines

In 1994 and 1995, discussions took place between some members of California, Nevada and Utah state WIT clubs regarding the possibility of again holding a "tri-state" rally to provide WIT members with an opportunity to enjoy a weekend of fellowship and activities. The people initially involved were: Orin and Clare Gilbertson (CA), Al and Alice Carrerow (CA), Bob and Ruth Johnson (CA), Frank and Marion Stramler (CA), Larry and Thelma Sherman (NV), Brownie and Joyce Nies (NV), Nyle and Joan Evans (UT), Frank and Shirley Robles (UT). It was agreed that the title would be “Southwest Regional Rally”.

Responsibilities for hosting the rally are rotated between participating states. The first Southwest Regional Rally was held in 1996 at the Oasis RV Resort in Las Vegas, NV with California as the host state. In 1997, Arizona joined as a sponsor, and New Mexico became a participant from 1998-2002. Utah discontinued participation in 2005. Following are the rally locations and host states:

Each state identifies three members as voting members of the planning committee, although observers are welcome at the committee meetings. The planning committee generally meets at the close of a rally, at GNR, and at the location of the next rally sometime in January. It has been suggested that planning committee members continue to serve when possible.

Bean Bag Baseball competition between the states began in 1997, and is one of the main events of each rally. A trophy (the "Brownie Cup") donated by 3T's RV Service is held by the winning state until the next year.

A Southwest Regional Rally bank account has been established at a bank in Forest City, IA. All funds are processed through this account, and a financial report is provided following each rally. Generally, the treasurer of the host state also acts as treasurer of the rally. Transfer of signature responsibility for checks is done during GNR.

Some points to consider in order to maintain successful rallies are:
o    Location should be centrally located to the states involved.
o    Plan at least one catered meal.
o    Breakfasts/lunches can be planned and served by participating states.
o    Plan an assortment of outdoor and indoor games.
o    Evening entertainment planned at least one night, usually on Saturday.
o    Dealers located near rally should be encouraged to display units and sponsor a meal.
o    Door prize donations are also important.
o    In the past, fund raising activities have included money hats, 50/50 drawings, T-shirts with the rally logo.
o    Seminars relating to the RV lifestyle should be included.

At this time, rally responsibilities are designated as follows:
Host State: Identify location, date and theme; Publicity, Registration, Scheduling and printing of programs, Entertainment, Dealer Displays, Catering, Decorations.
Second State: Games, Hospitality, Breakfasts, Ice Cream Social, Food and drink except catered meals.
Third State: Parking, Vendors, Seminars, Door Prizes, Raffles.
