"Seek Your Treasure" Theme

The 2010 Southwest Regional Rally was held this past April at the National Treasure RV Resort in Pahrump, Nevada.

This park has recently re-opened under new management and we were the first large rally at their park. The park was very accommodating and did an admiral job in their initial experience with a large number of motor homes. Maria coordinated the early arrivals and the slot tournament while Mark is the chef and organized the catered breakfasts and dinners.

The Resort has large concrete parking spaces and a beautiful clubhouse with many amenities. The theme was “Seek Your Treasure” in conjunction with the name of the resort. The Az Yavapai Winnies chapter supplied table decorations and a large display emphasizing seeking mining treasures in the past.
73 rigs attended the rally. Arizona led the way with 25 rigs. Nevada had 16, California had 19 and Utah had 6 rigs. There were 4 rigs from Washington, and several one state representatives from as far away as Illinois and Florida. The weather was fantastic this year and over half of the people arrived one or 2 days early. This kept the Parkers, Gene & Carol B. (Nv) and David P.(Az) busy all week. They did an outstanding job and no complaints were registered with the host state this year. There were enough people on Wednesday that a potluck supper was held in the ballroom.

Thursday was a very busy day as several people traveled to Mountain Falls golf course in the morning and played either 9 or 18 holes. We did not hear of any hole-in-one, but everyone had a good time. The resort negotiated an outstanding price for the players at a very nice golf club.
Thursday afternoon more than 40 people carpooled to the Nugget Casino for a "FREE" slot tournament. Again the resort supplied 3 prizes to the top 3 scorers. Sandy B. (from Az & Wa) was the winner of the tournament and received a free weeks stay at the resort as well as 2 free dinners at one of the restaurants in Pahrump. Most of the people then stayed for dinner at the Nugget on a 2 for 1 buffet.

The evening was concluded with nearly 15 people bowling at the Resort's 6 lane facility. Mae S.(Az) bowled a 145 game and Charles & Mary Y.(Nv), who bowl twice a week, had nearly identical games in the high 170s. Mary beat Charles by 1 pin. One of our Western area reps, Margie H. talked Ed P.(Az) into bowling a couple of games with her and he got very lucky and rolled a 200 game. That activity was a nice new addition to the SWRR events.

On Friday, the Resort provided a full breakfast before opening ceremonies followed by seminars. The afternoon was filled with seminars, Calvacade of Sports event, and the initial rounds of Beanbag Baseball games. Bingo followed a catered dinner.

Jack H. organized the Cavalcade of Sports event and presented ribbons to the top 3 scorers for both the men and the women. Mary Y. won first place for the women and Bill S. captured first palce for the men. $50 hats and 50-50 raffle tickets were also sold that evening.

77 people signed up for Beanbag Baseball. Since everyone couldn't play for the States bragging rights of the Brownie Cup, 5 At-Large Teams competed for the alternate championship. The Brownie Cup was introduced at the beginning of the SWRR 15 years ago in honor of Brownie Nies, one of the beanbag baseball creators. Unfortunately, Brownie passed away last year, but the SWRR will continue to hold the state competion in his honor.
3-Ts donated the original tropy (which is in Forest City) and also donated the latest verson above 5 years ago. Each year, the winning state is engraved on one of the plaques. Dave P. umpired the Cup games while Ed P. chaired the At-large games. As you can see, there were a lot of fans watching the Brownie cup games.

In the Brownie Cup chase, Arizona defeated Nevada in the first playoff game 14-4. They then played California who drew a first round bye on Saturday. Trailing Arizona 12-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, California rallied to tie the game. But Arizona scored 6 runs in the 10th to win the Brownie Cup 18-13. The highlight of the At-Large competition was a 1-1 tie into the 11th inning. A sudden death format resulted in Team 2 winning 2-1. (Lowest scoring game anyone can remember).

Before the evening's entertainment, the beanbag baseball presentations were made. The At-large champtions were introduced and presented with medals. Then Paul S. (3-Ts) introduced the Arizona champs and Jack H. (Nv) transferred the Brownie Cup from last year's winning Nevada team to the Arizona team scorekeeper, Jan S. Individual trophies were also presented to the state champtions for 2010.

Following a catered dinner by the Resort, some final door prizes were awarded before Rosie and her band performed a number of classic songs. People danced to the classic Western and 50's style music.

A continental breakfast on Sunday morning was followed by the Southwest Committee meeting. A motion was made and unamiously approved to hold the 2011 SWRR at the same resort because of its centralized location. Most of the feedback on the rally was positive with only a few suggestions on improvements primarily in more buffet lines to decrease the dinner time. The meeting was concluded with California members who attended the committe meeting agreeing to talk to their state club officers the next week at their state meeting to determine if Ca was going to host the 2011 SWRR rally. At their state meeting, California agreed to host the 2011 SWRR meeting at Pahrump, Nv.

THANKS TO ALL THE NEVADA AND ARIZONA MEMBERS WHO WORKED HARD TO MAKE THIS 2010 SWRR A HUGE SUCCESS !!!!!

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE NEXT YEAR
