|
The 2009 Southwest Regional Rally was held this past April at the Oasis RV Park in Las Vegas. This park has large parking spaces as well as a large ballroom but with no kitchen facilities for our use or no alcohol allowed to be brought into the facility. The theme was “Viva Las Vegas”. Eighty One rigs registered for the rally. Arizona had 12 registered rigs.

The weather was great this year and nearly half of the people arrived one day early. That eased the job for the Parkers who were stationed at the end of the entrance road. The remainder of the people arrived Thursday in time for the traditional potluck dinner and opening ceremonies where “good food” was served and “good friends” were reunited.

Friday morning was very busy for half of the Arizona contingent as we had to get up early to cook breakfast outside in a vacant rv site. Biscuits and gravy was served inside with a fruit salad and orange juice and coffee. With two lines, everyone was served in 20 mintues except for the stragglers who slept in. There were seminars in the morning. In the afternoon more than 40 people made it over to the Silverton casino for a slot tournament organized by John K and Warren H. You can see above John presenting the first prize to Paula S at the awards ceremony Saturday evening. The host state Nevada cooked a spaghetti dinner Friday evening and Az carried out the traditional ice cream social afterward. Many people took off for the strip or nearby casinos that evening.

Saturday morning, the other half of the Az contingent rose early to scramble 30 dozen eggs that were served with sausage and veggies on a tortilla. That was followed by some seminars and the cavalcade of games shown above. Mary R, friend of Bob M, won the ladies competition and Bob M won the men's event.

Of course the afternoon was filled with beanbag baseball as the states vied for the coveted "Brownie" cup and bragging rights for the next year. We beat California (YEAH) in the first game easily, but lost by ONE run in the title game to Nevada. Our team did great with many first timers. Arizona tried a new state competition with the "Super Jenga" game after BBB. There were 5 members on each team. California ran away with the game as they increased the number of rows from 18 to 26 before it collapsed. Of course they had a lot of help as the WIT Western rep (who was that again?) was part of their team and was really into the event coaching each of the other members.

Following a catered dinner supplied by the host park, a local group provided music for dancing and enjoyment. Afterwards, the remaining door prizes and awards were presented. Our own Paula S won the money hat. Sunday morning, Arizona provided Dunkin Donuts as many gathered to say goodbyes. The SWRR committee met and discussed the pros and cons of the rally. It was announced that the 2010 SWRR meeting most likely will be at the KOA (formerly Desert Retreat RV Park) in Pahrump, Nevada. Our President, Don Cowden would like to thank all the people who attended the rally and worked so hard at the breakfasts and games to help make the rally a success. Remember, next year is our turn to host the SWRR rally, so we will need a lot of help in the upcoming year. Plan now to attend.
