DECEMBER WRITE-UP

Hosts arrived a day early to finalize plans for the outing and make a quick trip into Anthem for last minute purchases. Anthem is a town just up I-17 from the campsite and another destination for campers to consider exploring during spare time. Since Grand Canyon Winnies President, his wife and GCW Secretary and Valley Suntascan member Bob M had also arrived early, this small group ventured out for dinner on Thursday and to sample the food at the Pioneer Village Restaurant, a western theme restaurant located adjacent to the campground. We learned that one cannot judge a restaurant by how busy it is; there were no other patrons in the place when we enjoyed our delicious meal. We highly recommend Pioneer Village Restaurant to future groups. In addition to the restaurant, Pioneer Village houses a horse riding facility and is the home of a well-publicized museum.

As the weekend progressed, on Friday the camaraderie commenced with happy hour in mid-afternoon followed by a dinner of sub sandwiches from Fry’s (ordered in the town of Anthem); campers added their favorite side dishes to round out the meal. By the time campers showed up at the Pioneer Room for a 10:00 am brunch on Saturday, the room had taken on a holiday theme with table decorations consisting of Christmas garland, Santa Clauses, poinsettia as well as a table waiting to hold unwrapped toys for children (as our annual good will gesture) and gifts identified for either a man or woman to be exchanged following dinner that night. The day progressed with a couple hours for exploring the area (or napping), and at 2:00 pm President Ed P facilitated a brief meeting to conduct unfinished business before turning the floor over to Nominating Committee Chair Ron W to facilitate the election of 2009 officers using “Robert’s Rules of Order”. Officers were elected and sworn in by the State President.

We picked up the pace with happy hour followed by the holiday meal – the chapter provided the meat and desert and members provided their favorite side dishes. The gift exchange included a great mix of “gag” gifts and much coveted items combined with loud laughter and heckling where appropriate. Hesitating to end the enjoyment of the day, several campers indulged in their favorite games either in the Pioneer Room or back in their rigs.

Sunday was a delayed farewell as most lingered around the table laden with sweet rolls and juice visiting with friends and wishing all the blessings of the holiday before heading down the highway towards home.
